How to Pass California C-10 Electrical Exams
It requires you to pass TWO separate exams: the Law & Business Examination and the Trade Examination. Mastering state-specific regulations, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and load calculations. Our comprehensive study system helps you prepare for both with specific, tailored practice questions.
Topics Covered
Who Takes This Exam?
Contractors & Certified Electricians
Anyone seeking an Electrical Contractor license or Electrician Certification in California must pass a state exam.
Pre-Licensing Requirements
You must be 18+, complete apprenticeship or experience requirements, and submit any required documentation before your California electrical certification or contractor license can be issued.
Master Your California Electrical Exams
Learn from expert insights and avoid the most common pitfalls that trip up test-takers in California.
Study Tips
Expert strategies for success
Study Business Law (CSLB)
If you are taking the C-10, allocate significant time to study California mechanics liens, labor laws, and contractor business practices.
Learn to Navigate the NEC
For the closed-book CSLB exams, speed and recall are key. Learn core concepts and common formulas, as you cannot bring an NEC index to help you.
Practice Calculations
A significant portion of the exams involves math. Master Ohm’s Law, voltage drop, box fill, and load calculations.
Review Cal/OSHA Safety
Don’t ignore the safety section. Know the rules for PPE, ladders, scaffolding, and confined spaces found in the Cal/OSHA Safety Orders.
Common Mistakes
Pitfalls to avoid on test day
Grounding vs. Bonding
Many candidates confuse grounding (connecting to earth) with bonding (connecting paths for fault current), which are distinct concepts in the NEC.
Box Fill Calculations
Incorrectly calculating box fill volume by missing deductions for clamps, devices, or equipment grounding conductors.
Voltage Drop Formulas
Using the wrong formula or resistance values (K-factor) when calculating voltage drop for long runs.
Motor Circuit Sizing
Mixing up the rules for sizing motor branch-circuit conductors (125%) vs. overload protection vs. short-circuit protection.

Your Questions Answered
Quick answers to the most common questions about the California electrical contractor licensing exam
How do I pass my California C-10 electrical exam?
To pass, you need to master electrical calculations and theory under time pressure. Because the CSLB C-10 Contractor exam is closed-book, the key is memorizing formulas and understanding how to apply the code. Focus on Article 220 (Calculations), Article 230 (Services), Article 250 (Grounding), and Article 430 (Motors).
Are the California contractor exams open book?
No. Both the CSLB Law & Business exam and the C-10 Trade exam are strictly closed-book. You cannot bring any reference materials, code books, or notes into the PSI testing center.
How long is my application good for?
All applications are given 18 months from the day they are accepted to pass the examination(s). If you do not pass within 18 months, your application is considered void, and you will have to submit a new application with new fees.
How soon will I know if I passed or failed?
At the end of your examination, you’ll be given a printed report showing whether you passed or failed. The failing score report will indicate your overall score and a breakdown by section. The passing score report does not show the overall score.
What happens if I fail my electrical exam?
If you fail, you can reschedule the exam. You must wait at least 21 calendar days between attempts, and you will have to pay a $100 rescheduling fee to the CSLB. You only have to retake the specific exam you failed.
