Bushing

A fitting placed on the end of a conduit to protect wires from abrasion where they exit the conduit.

Detailed Explanation

NEC 300.4(G) requires insulating bushings on conduit where conductors of 4 AWG or larger enter an enclosure, unless the design of the fitting provides equivalent protection. Plastic bushings are used on EMT, while grounding bushings with lugs are used on rigid conduit where bonding is required. Proper bushing installation prevents conductor insulation damage that could lead to ground faults or short circuits.
