Disconnect (Disconnecting Means)

A device or group of devices used to disconnect conductors of a circuit from their source of supply.

Detailed Explanation

NEC Article 225.31-40 and 230.70-82 cover disconnecting means requirements. Every building must have a main disconnect at a readily accessible location. Motor disconnects must be within sight of the motor and controller (NEC 430.102). Disconnects must be capable of being locked in the open position for lockout/tagout procedures. Common types include circuit breakers, safety switches, and motor disconnect switches.
