Tap Rules

NEC provisions that allow conductors to be connected to a feeder without overcurrent protection at the tap point, under specific conditions regarding conductor length and termination.

Detailed Explanation

NEC 240.21 provides several tap rules. The most common is the 10-foot tap rule: tap conductors can be up to 10 feet long without overcurrent protection at the tap point if they have an ampacity not less than the rating of the device at the termination end and are enclosed in a raceway. The 25-foot tap rule allows longer taps with additional conditions. Tap rules are frequently tested on the C-10 exam and commonly used in commercial installations.
