Electrical Exam Term

Weatherproof

Constructed or protected so that exposure to weather conditions such as rain, snow, and wind will not interfere with successful operation of the equipment.

Detailed Explanation

Weatherproof is not the same as waterproof. Weatherproof equipment (NEMA 3R rated) resists falling rain and ice but is not submersible. NEC requires weatherproof covers on outdoor receptacles — in-use covers (bubble covers) are required where receptacles are likely to be used while it's raining. Outdoor panelboards, disconnects, and junction boxes must use weatherproof enclosures rated for their specific environmental conditions.
